Nice detailed info. This whole thing infuriates me. The other shameful "endorsement" for health insurance reform is from the ADA, who is poised to profit millions from the new legislation. Endorsement from the ADA in no way means endorsement from doctors and the health care industry.

AARP has had this conflict of interest for a long time. They have done a lot of good, but they sell both high quality insurance products and products that do nothing but take money from their members.

Many seniors believe that AARP is their ombudsman and swear by them. As I said, they have done a lot of good over the years and many of the policies they sell are good. However, a consumer should be just as skeptical of a product sold by AARP as they be of a product sold by another insurance selling organization.

Clark Howard (the radio host) did a rant on afinity scams recently. He didn't mention AARP by name, nor do I think he had them in mind when he did his rant. However, he said that people often let their guard down when they are being sold by people who are members of their church or social organization and they shouldn't.

If AARP is now getting 60 percent of it's income in insurance commissions, let the member beware.
